  • State Library Agency Service Trends: 1999-2008, Research Brief No. 2, March 2010, institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

"This research brief gives an overview of the revenues, expenditures, and services provided by state library agencies (StLAs) during fiscal year (FY) 2008. State library agencies are official agencies charged by state law with the extension and development of library services throughout the state; they have authority under state law to administer state plans in accordance with the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) (P.L. 104-208). The 2008 fiscal year includes parts of 2007 and 2008; for the vast majority of states (46), the 2008 fiscal year started on 7/1/2007 and ended on 6/30/2008. Because of the time period this survey spans, it does not reflect the full budgetary impact of the current economic downturn."

  • Planets Survey Analysis Report, Planets Project deliverable, May 6, 2010.

From the Executive Summary: "In early 2009 Planets conducted an on-line survey of people with an interest in digital preservation. In particular, national libraries and archives in Europe were targeted. The objectives of the survey were to:

    • Better understand digital preservation needs within European organisations that create or hold digital content
    • Establish and begin to quantify and qualify demand for Planets' tools and services
    • Identify the most appropriate packaging for Planets to meet market requirements
    • Inform the design of a follow-on organisation to sustain Planets' products and services
    • after 2010."

"The survey had a relatively large number of responses (over 200). While the respondents were from a wide variety of organisations, approximately two fifths were from libraries and a third from archives."

  • Implications of MARC Tag Usage on Library Metadata Practices, by Karen Smith-Yoshimura et al., a publication of OCLC Research in support of the RLG Partnership, March 2010.

From the Executive Summary: "The report acknowledges that 'Many of the users of library online catalogs are librarians and staff – these individuals form an important catalog user community themselves. Therefore, just as catalog end users (e.g. citizens, students, and faculty) have information needs, preferences, and expectations that need to be supported by catalog data, so do librarians who get their work done using the data underpinning the catalog' (p. 3). As such, librarians and library staff were also queried regarding desired data quality enhancements, with the top five being: merge duplicate records, add tables of content, add summaries, fix typos, upgrade brief records."

  • Our vision and strategy for heritage science, by the National Heritage Science Strategy (NHSS) Steering Group, March 2010.

"The NHSS vision and strategy has two aims:

    1. to demonstrate the public benefit of heritage science and increase public engagement and support for it, and
    2. to improve partnership within the sector and with others by increasing collaboration to help practice make better use of research, knowledge and innovation and to enhance resources, funding and skills."
  • Opportunity for All: How the American Public Benefits from Internet Access at U.S. Libraries, by Samantha Becker et al., (IMLS-2010-RES-01). Institute of Museum and Library Services. Washington, D.C., March 2010.

"Over the past decade and a half, free access to computers and the Internet in U.S. public libraries evolved from a rare commodity into a core service....This study provides the first large-scale investigation of the ways library patrons use this service, why they use it, and how it affects their lives. A national telephone survey, nearly 45,000 online surveys at public libraries, and hundreds of interviews reveal the central role modern libraries play in a digital society."
