These identifiers are permanently assigned to the digital object and are retained, even if the physical location of the object changes. This system, which was originally funded through federal contracts, is the basis for commercial publishing approaches such as the Digital Object Identifier and CrossRef. This workshop will focus on traditional and non-traditional uses. Federal implementers of Handles will discuss their applications. The workshop will end with a discussion of Handles as a component of an infrastructure for federal digital information management, integration and preservation.
The workshop is intended for information managers, webmasters, content developers/managers, information architects, technical developers, librarians and archivists.

The universities have in common that they educate in the field of Library and Information Education and Research under the umbrella of EUCLID (European Association for Library and Information Education and Research).
